This で is continuous form of a auxiliary verb だ that means "conclusion".

It is used when a sentence follows. For example, 私は日本人で、彼はアメリカ人だ。(I am Japanese and he is American.).

  • I mean 断定 because だ is 断定の助動詞. Are there other appropriate words for it? Commented Jun 15, 2018 at 15:16
  • @Blavius It's just the name for the copula in Japanese school grammar, although the name doesn't really make sense.
