How to say I am hungry? おなかが空きます

how do you use the phrase 'おなかがすきます' to express you are hungry? I heard from different sources that 'おなかが空きます' is apparently better than 'おかかが空いています', is this true? Because grammatically the second option should do a better job of conveying the idea that I am in a state of being hungry.

Alternatively, is there other expressions for 'I'm hungry' in Japanese that's used in every day speech contexts?

Thank you!
