助詞「しか」. An adverbial particle which marks an element X when nothing but X makes the expressed proposition true. Always accompanied by negation, and sometimes appears in the colloquial forms しきゃ or っきゃ.

This is an interesting question, since when I read the sentence leading up to "しか", I expected a "なかった" or "できなかった" to follow. So I think the form "[verb]しか" here implies that a negation should follow …
