The explanation you provided on the etymology of です is definitely accurate too. Whether the で in ので is treated as the てform or the ます stem, I think it is clear that のだ and ので are related and also have similar meanings. | |

It is a contraction of the particle "にて"/"で" and the verb "ある". Its て-form is also therefore a contraction of a particle and a verb. The で in ので, however, is not the て-form of the contraction of にて+ある. It is the particle "にて"/"で" without the verb "ある" attached, making it different than the て-form of だ. | |
