I'm troubled by the poor quality of machine translation when clauses are involved. My own translation skills are often better, never worse, but seldom good enough. I don't think the machines use grammar as we know it which might be an endorsement of old school grammar. I believe your grasp of same exceeds mine so I am interested in your ideas and opinions on grammar and its role in understanding complex Japanese sentences - e.g. those found in the popular press.
