And in "供述しており", is it common practice for news reporters to use the 謙譲語 form of おり when talking about criminals or suspects.

    Does this answer your question? ねば in 食べねば; relation between ねば and なければ Also, おり is often used in the continuative construction because ~てい sounds somewhat awkward. おる isn't always humble either - in western Japan it's a normal verb, and even in eastern Japan you sometimes here おられる as an honorific verb.
