Why do we need the の in A's line (一時を過ぎてしまう)? It seems to me that it's for emphasis. Can I remove it?

As for B's line, の also appears at the end of the sentence (箱に戻るか), so I guess it may function the same way. Can I just say 箱に戻るか?
