I am at the very beginning of my learning of japanese and am not sure to understand the て in "見ないで".

I think 見ないで would mean "don't watch" whereas 見ないで would mean "stop watching" but i thought the last one would need the use of ている... Is いる not needed in this context or am i missing something ?

Context :

The original sentence was 見てないで助けてくれよ!translated as "Stop watching and help me !" (in Clannad anime ep 1 :) with a guy in trouble asking for help to his friend)
