So I started typing this up so I'd have a centralized source of all the different ways to express obligation, e.g., must verb, have to verb, etc. I was getting this from a website that I can no longer find. I'm hoping someone here would be willing to take a look, fix inaccuracies, add anything useful, etc. Please excuse the romaji.

(Verb) + A + B

Choices for A

① なければ (nakereba) Formal/Written

② なくては (nakute wa) Formal/Written

③ ないと (naito) nakereba Contracted

④ なくちゃ (nakucha) nakute Contracted

Choices for B

④ なりません (narimasen) Polite ⑤

⑤ ならない (naranai) Plain ④

⑥ いけません (ikemasen) Polite ⑦

⑦ いけない (ikenai) Plain ⑥

① & ④ nakereba narimasen (Polite)

① & ⑤ nakereba naranai (Plain)

① & ⑥ nakereba ikemasen (Polite)

① & ⑦ nakereba ikenai (Plain)

② & ④ nakute wa narimasen (Polite)

② & ⑤ nakute wa naranai (Plain)

② & ⑥ nakute wa ikemasen (Polite)

② & ⑦ nakute wa ikenai (Plain)

③ & ⑥ nakute wa ikemasen (Polite)

③ & ⑦ nakute wa ikenai (Plain)

NOT USED

③ & ④ naito narimasen

③ & ⑤ naito naranai

Also if anyone would like to add notes regarding meaning and nuance, that would be great.

Thanks.
