I'm going through an exercise book to prepare for the N2 exam, and I got confused by this question:


There are choices for 歩きつつ and 歩きながら, and the answer is 歩きながら.

What's the difference between つつ and ながら in this case and why does one have to use the latter?

歩きつつタバコを吸わないでよ sounds strange since つつ sounds literary (文語的) and doesn't go well with the latter half of the sentence タバコを吸わないでよ which is pretty colloquial (口語的).

This 古語辞典 says:
