I have always assumed that yaru and suru could be used the same way. Is yaru less formal? Nani wo suru no and nani wo yaru no.

    @Jack, それは、「何やるの」の「を」が落ちたものですので・・。 「XXやる/する」「XX勉強やる/する」と「XX勉強する」はいいですが、「XXを勉強やる」とは言いません。 – Chocolate Aug 13 at 17:03
