Feb 5, 2019 at 4:49 comment added DXV +1 to the part "indication that this would be perceived to be an activity that is not expected to occur". If owls weren't known to be nocturnal this sentence would not make sense.
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:37 comment added sazarando I agree, the OP though, is asking about particle choice. The information in this answer about the phrase 真っ昼間 is good, but it doesn't address the OP's question.
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:31 comment added BJCUAI @snailboat As I see it, it is an identical pattern, as regards に vs から (with から being significantly more frequent in usage).
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:23 comment added user1478 This is similar to から in 朝っぱらから, isn't it?
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:23 comment added naruto @sazarando Both do, and that's why I wanted to point out 昼間っから also has a similar nuance.
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:22 comment added BJCUAI @sazarando As I understand, there can be a judgmental tone with に, but not necessarily. It depends on context. Any such tone, though, would not due to the 'early hour' of the thing being done, rather, that it is done for everyone to see in the clear light of day.
Feb 5, 2019 at 3:14 comment added sazarando Doesn't the nuance of judgement come from the emphasis on the time (昼間 vs 真っ昼間) rather than the choice of particle (から vs に)?
Feb 5, 2019 at 2:30 comment added naruto +1. We also say 昼間っから, which also has an accusatory overtone. For example 昼間っから酒ばっかり飲んでる, 昼間っからイチャイチャしやがって.
