Jul 16, 2017 at 1:56 comment added chocolate @A.Ellett So, again, I wouldn't go so far as to say you're incorrect in calling it ateji. As stated in the Wiki article, jukujikun and ateji are two different things in a narrower sense, but in a broader sense jukujikun is treated as a kind of ateji. The majority of Japanese call it ateji in daily life, too. (btw, 明鏡国語辞典 lists 海苔(のり)、田舎(いなか)、昨日(きのう)、麦酒(ビール)、煙管(キセル)、燐寸(マッチ) along with 甘味(甘み)、目出度い、矢鱈(やたら)、亜細亜、合羽(カッパ)、珈琲(コーヒー) as ateji, and 紅葉(もみじ) as 熟字訓)

Jul 15, 2017 at 14:38 comment added chocolate 当て字っていうのは、漢字の意味を無視して、漢字の読みだけを考慮して漢字を充てるもので、「[珈琲]{こーひー}」「[出鱈目]{でたらめ}」とかです。で、熟字訓っていうのは反対に、読みを無視して、意味だけを考えて漢字をあてるもので、「[昨日]{きのう}」「[梅雨]{つゆ}」などなんです。でも、広義には、両方とも「当て字」って呼ぶことが多いんですよね。

Jul 15, 2017 at 11:50 comment added M Palmer So what is the reasoning for 当て字 here? My understanding is that it was a precursor to カタカナ, in which characters are chosen for pronunciation and not meaning, but presumably あなた is a native Japanese word. And how would it come to be that the characters have no relation in either pronunciation OR meaning to the word?

Jul 15, 2017 at 0:27 comment added A.Ellett @Chocolate Does that mean I'm incorrect in calling it ateji?
