On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

こんにちは。Chocolate です。

Hello, everyone! I'm Chocolate, and I've been a member of this site for 3 years and a half.

I'm a native speaker of Japanese, and the primary reason I'm nominating myself is because I thought it would be beneficial for the site to have at least one native Japanese speaker as a moderator. Being Japanese, I believe that I can help with disputes that occur entirely in Japanese.

Although I'm not good at writing English, I can understand pretty much everything written in English on the site. I have no prior experience of moderating a site, but I will always do my best to keep the site a comfortable place for everyone.

これからも皆さんにいろいろ教えていただくことがあると思いますが、よろしくお願いします。

I believe I would make a good moderator for the following reasons.

I have experience moderating other forums and I am familiar with the types of duties a moderator regularly performs. I am a calm person who does not get involved in heated arguments, and I try to be as fair as possible when some type of dispute arises. I understand that it is important to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially in online communication, because many of the physical cues we absorb in face-to-face interactions are absent online. Users are just trying to get along with each other, and a good moderator should facilitate this, not get in the way.

I am a native speaker of English with several degrees in linguistics. I am completely fluent in Japanese and I have been very active on this site since I joined last year. I usually get excellent feedback for my answers, and I enjoy the process of crafting a clear and concise answer to a Japanese-related question.

This site is a wonderful resource for anyone learning Japanese and I would love to be a part of the team that helps make this site an even more fair, informative, friendly, and enjoyable community to spend time in. Thank you.

This election is over.
