What does っつの mean? @yadokari: I imagine なんつって comes from なんかいって, since it's often used to mark speech without an exact wording. (In English, the best parallel is the slang expression, "He was like, '[statement]'.") The alternate use of なんつって to mean "Just kidding!" might be a masculine version of the somewhat feminine なんていっちゃって, which is shortened to なんちゃって. |

Is じゃないです equally correct as じゃありません? @istrasci: Google. One trick is to put filetype:pdf into the query, which biases the results toward academic papers (usually published in PDF format). |

Can I use 行っている間(に) in the sense of a habitual action? @Dave M G: I believe the meaning of "on the way to" is better expressed in Japanese by ~に行く途中だ or ~に向かっている. I can't personally recall ~に行っている being used to mean "on the way to ~", but as usual, I'm working with a small sample size. |

How to invoke God/spirits in Japanese Another reference: The 1955 Japanese version of the Bible, which is what you'll find in most Christian churches in Japan, uses よ a lot. Psalm 8:1 reads 主、われらの主 よ 、あなたの名は地にあまねく、いかに尊いことでしょう。 "O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth [...]" (NASB). |

Why do we use 〜ないで instead of 〜なくて before auxiliary ください? @Lukman: I may be off on a dead-end rabbit trail with this one, so don't assume this theory is Undeniable Truth. (Actually, last night I came across cases where this reasoning doesn't apply well to ~なくて, so this answer may only work with the edge cases of ~ください and いる.) |
