I have been a Tokyo resident for 6 years; I've studied Japanese for 10.

My company Long Weekend LLC develops Awesome mobile software, including Japanese Flash, the best iOS Japanese vocabulary study tool out there. We also develop Rikai Browser, which allows you to translate Japanese words on web pages in realtime on iOS (may be very good for reading this site!).

comment IT system renewal: Can I say 更新 for “renewal”?
yes, you are most certainly right in that regard. When I said "related to processes", I meant within the context of an IT department :)

comment お金と「ちょうど」の使い方 (usage of “chōdo”)
My girlfriend just confirmed that YOU's answer is not only correct, but that the person who says "chodo" in the case of taking more than the total is incorrect.

更新 is definitely the best word. 改善 usually also involves processes, so if you're changing a business process AND the piece of software running it, then maybe kaizen is better. But I like 更新

comment What is the difference between その and あの?
@Mark, not sure. I agree with the OP - I learned (although could be wrong!) that ano was more for a shared experience. "Ano" when it's not a shared experience when storytelling would make it sound more like you're recalling it to yourself (as part of the story) -- which could work, but I'd usually say sono.

comment In modern usage how do Japanese natives regard the differences between 外人, 外国人 and 外人さん?
Ditto, I feel like the Japanese person I am speaking to is out of touch if they refer to gaijin-san
