@snailboat, my conception of the word was previously the same as yours, until I was told (convincingly) other wise on this site. Maybe I misunderstood but idk now.

You are probably right but I don't understand your answer. I imagine that san after a name means something like Mr or Ms but this may be wrong. Is a literal translation of the phrase in question, "Honorable Mr/Ms hardship"?
