comment Did ありがとう come from Portuguese “obrigado”?
@AndrewGrimm While I agree with your comment, you might want to re-word since it confused me at first! I thought you were saying "they better keep making this claim" as in they SHOULD keep making this claim rather than what I would hope is your intended meaning of that it's common for knowledgeable people to make this claim.

comment Why do TV subtitles use spaces (instead of commas)?
Honestly, I'm not terribly concerned over this question, but it seems like a lot of effort was put into finding examples for/against the theory. So +1 from me.

comment Are most counter words made up of two parts? What are those two parts called?
It might help if you say which word means what so that people don't have to go look up the words elsewhere.

comment What do you mean, “In Japanese there are no words for ”I’m suffering“”?
#2 gave me an idea. Maybe the woman said something like "In Japan, you can't say that you're suffering or you're sad." Someone could have easily misinterpreted that to mean that it's physically impossible to express such phenomena in Japanese rather than the fact that it's uncommon to do so.

comment Is まい as in あるまい really only used in literary texts or TV?
I'd say that most if not all people posting questions here have some "flaw" (even if it's a minor one) on their understanding of Japanese, and it shouldn't be considered negative here. :)

comment What does 氏 mean after a name, how is it different from さん or 様?
@DaveMG I think the bit about attaining fluency is overly negative. Are you saying that deep questions about Japanese should not be posted here? If so, I greatly disagree.

comment Which readings would you use to pronounce people's names?
Huh, interesting that their method of reading names is kind of similar to my own. I only know how to read a small collection of names, but it's also out of pure memorization.

Man, perfect timing. I needed an answer for this for the first time ever last night, and I remembered seeing this post earlier in the night.
