comment How to say “Slice of life anime”?
@istrasci - Anime that doesn't really have a plot, but is basically just about the day to day going on of someone's (or a group of people's) lives. Arguably Seinfeld could be considered to be "slice of life"

comment What is the proper term for the use of archaic kanji?
@Bathrobe - Cleaned up the comments a bit to avoid prolonged discussion, but that comment relates back to a very niche discussion that I've been having about Japanese and Chinese artwork elsewhere.

comment What does MC mean in Japanese?
@moai-kun - MC is still used native English but its usage depends upon where you are, in some native English speaking countries it has fallen out of use were as in others is of limited use to concert performances.

comment Who scolded whom in Aに怒られる?
@sawa - I'm with @Dave in regards to that to the language ability of the average Japanese person, knowing the grammar of a language is not the same as being functional in a language and most native speakers of a language can't really explain the how or why the grammar of a language works. This is part of the reason why people that go for a TOEFL course end up saying they learned things about English that they never knew.

comment Is the use of 先生 and similar titles context sensitive?
@Amanda S - The edit was intended as a clarification of the original question, from my standpoint, a new question on the same topic would be redundant.

comment Is the use of 先生 and similar titles context sensitive?
Ah, yes, and this is a bit more what I was driving at in the question. The teacher-student relationship is pretty obvious on school grounds and the like but outside of school or in collegiate situations where you might work in several different situations with someone it seems to get a bit more complex.

comment Is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) a good measure of my Japanese language ability?
@Dave M G - The site is still a bit too new to have a firm yes or no for most questions, your best bet is to either start a new thread with the allowed-questions tag specific to this question or find a similar one to add it to.

comment Is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) a good measure of my Japanese language ability?
@Dave M G - This isn't the place to discuss the validity of a question but that should be done on Meta instead.

@Tsuyoshi - Let's discuss this over on Meta - meta.japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/271/…

comment RegEx match sentences except sentences contained in 「」
Indeed, this should be migrated over to Stack Overflow as it is more of a i18n question than a Japanese specific question.

comment Is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) a good measure of my Japanese language ability?
@YOU - That's only if you make a pure guess, if you can remove two answers as obviously wrong then you are only left with two which is where the 50/50 chance comes from.

comment Is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) a good measure of my Japanese language ability?
@Ali - Not a problem, I think we actually agree on some things even though have a slightly different take on them in practice. Once the languages site is around (area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/16613/languages) it might be a better place for some of the "how do I learn things" questions that really aren't specific to Japanese even though people want to ask them.

comment Is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) a good measure of my Japanese language ability?
@Ali - Well, I am narrowing my range of what I consider to be on/off topic. :) I do think we are going to have to take some of the questions that are leaning towards off-topic and move them over to the FAQ though, or keep them around in community wiki and use them to vote-to-close the others as duplicates so people can still get the information.

Disagree in regards to the off-topic vote, the test is about the Japanese language and is given in Japanese grammar so it should be on-topic for the site even if it is a bit of an edge case.

comment How to write hiragana and katakana in Windows?
Voted off topic, but something we should include in the site FAQ.

comment What should I look for in a dictionary to help me study?
@jkerian - Thus trying to find the right way to format the question: telling someone what to look for in a tool is going to be much more useful than telling them what tool to get.

comment What should I look for in a dictionary to help me study?
@jkerian - However, one could argue that that question would also get state fairly quickly and would be off-topic for that reason. That said, this question is formatted along the line of what you might see on programmers.stackexchange.com as opposed to stackoverflow.com proper.

comment What should I look for in a dictionary to help me study?
@jkerian - The degree of specific-ness is a bit of a meta question but basically I'm trying to format the question at the general "What should I look for" level that would cover everyone as opposed to the "I'm a [traveler / student / scholar], what would you recommend?" type question.

@Ali - I disagree with it being off-topic. Lets leave it open for now (since we are in private mode) and discuss it over on meta.

@jkerian - I've expanded the question a bit to try and cover all of the options.
