Words made from strokes of a kanji like 女 toくノ一 On a similar note, the word for cross is 十字架. |

Why is it 日本語がわかります instead of 日本語をわかります? To me, the concept of "double-ga predicates" sounds like it was made up to make things easier for learners. These are simply intransitive verbs (or not even verbs at all, like 好き) in Japanese grammar, and have no object. In 魚が好き or 本が要る, 魚 and 本 are the subjects. |

Transitive/Intransitive + にくい (and +られる) Derek: with 水と油は混ざりにくい, you're talking about a potentially spontaneous process. It doesn't seem at all strange to me that the verb is intransitive. Same with 雪が降りにくい: who would be making the snow fall? You cannot find a single criterion that applies to all situations, you need to consider different cases. My "purpose" criterion can be applied when there would otherwise be a doubt as to whether to use the transitive or intransitive version of a verb pair, but in this case there is not. |

Transitive/Intransitive + にくい (and +られる) No particular reason, I just let the IME choose. |

Transitive/Intransitive + にくい (and +られる) You're right! I had not read that part. Allow me to fire a second salvo, then... |

ここんとこ (ここん所) and other “every now and then” adverbs "Lately" does not mean the same thing as "every now and then". |
