I'm a student majoring in Languages (branch: Linguistics), currently working as a freelance translator. I've recently discovered Dropbox and I'm going to use it for my needs! :)

I love
Languages, Movies (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Tarantino, etc.), Music, 3D Graphics, books and so on.

Appointed ♦ Moderator Pro Tempore on Linguistics SE, Chinese SE and the Russian SE site. If you're interested in other Stack Exchanges, try the Italian SE site.

I like to lurk on other sites' Metas. Meta is fun!

My feature requests:

  1. Alert a moderator when an answer is improved after a post notice
  2. Automatically add chat event to the community bulletin (or make it easier)
  3. Give 10k users the ability to see the total count of flags they've handled

Moderator issues: If you have concerns or want to contact me about my moderation, you can find/ping me either in the Linguistics SE chat room or CL&U chat room; if I'm not there or I'm "idle", just ping me! Please avoid using my personal email for such things. Use the chat rooms.

comment Homographs: how to deal with them?
Can 一日 also be duration? Maybe a less precise and more general term than 一日中?

I didn't find a tag with "homographic-kanji", I'll create a tag wiki for that.

comment Is there a difference between 赤{あか} and 赤色{あかいろ}?
No, I don't think that. But I think that users with such a nice series of given answers can't really be here writing wrong things, regardless if you take some time or not writing them. :)

comment Is there a difference between 赤{あか} and 赤色{あかいろ}?
Yes, it's not always true, but well, look at your answers and rep. You surely don't belong to that category. :) Anyway, I was just wondering. I'll be waiting :D

Just out of curiosity, why don't you explain those differences in meaning and usages? You're a native speaker, no? :D

comment 寝る vs. 眠る, what's the real difference?
I re-corrected your question. My edit needs to be peer reviewed but remember that you should meet some standards when writing a question, like: No abusing of bold, unnecessary expressions (SMACKDOWN in the title is distracting). I posted on your question "Disallow "petty" editing" in Meta.

Same goes for こんばんは, by the way.

comment Replying to Omedetou
@Axioplase: Could you add the translation? I understand the first two, but the third one is not clear to non-experts like me. :D

comment What's the difference between 成人 and 大人?
@Enno: It is from the dictionary which is standard on my computer. I linked the name of the Thesaurus and the company page on Wikipedia.

comment Distinguishing certain characters in handwriting and print (Similar-looking Kana and Kanji)
Indeed, the discussion about handwriting seems too broad and rather imprecise to me. It's impossible to reasonably cover the handwriting of thousands of people. The question is good and interesting to me, but answering to it... It's not easy and I honestly don't think there is a definite answer.

I found something on my Japanese synonyms dictionary, but I can't understand it all so I don't know how to parse it here in order to help you. :D

Thanks for your answer and the link! It seems the most complete to me. +1 and accepted.

comment Using more than one の
Thanks Ito. I have no real intention of repeating the ~の endlessly :D but thanks for your answer. I appreciated your examples even if at the moment I can't understand them completely due to my poor Japanese knowledge. But your answer seems the most complete. :)

@sawa: Considering your answer, was I wrong or not here? How to choose between “よん” (yon) vs “し” (shi) for “四” (4) and “しち” (shichi) vs “なな” (nana) for “七” (7)?.

I don't understand the downvote, especially because of this answer. japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/2364/…
