comment Mixture of romaji and hiragana in NHK “Meet and Speak”
Just my guess, but during these episodes they introduce new hiragana to be learned. Possibly the romaji are for kana not yet introduced at the time of this episode? To me it just seems confusing though.

comment Why is 渡部 累 transliterated/translated to “Lui Watanabe” with an “L”?
But neither of Rui/Lui are common in English. I think commonly usage of L this way is done by Chinese speaking persons doing such translation (esp. persons from Hong Kong or Singapore). I don't know any Chinese, but I wonder if Lui sounds better to them.

comment Is “げえしゃ” a valid pronunciation of “芸者”?
It might be a street legend, but many times I heard that the ee pronunciation that results in “kerry-okee”, "haree-keree" were purposeful mispronunciations of Japanese by Allied occupation forces after WWII. When they returned home, such pronunciation became common in those countries. If true, it is kind of sad, really.

@istrasci The answer in that question is not so clear, and it would be helpful to have some good examples.

comment How to say pork loin in Japanese
Did you do a search on 豚ロース レシピ? The top hits use ロース. Maybe similar somehow to your recipe? Also this might be a good terminology question for a butcher (loin vs. roast and what's the difference).

comment Question about mixed kana in おススメ
I see... I can understand the difference kanji vs. kana, but why so many kana version (おすすめ、オススメ、おススメ)? Is there any point to it, or is it just to keep things interesting?

comment Intuitive or logical way to know when to use a kanji spelling vs hiragana spelling?
@hippietrail No, because you probably would not have a bean on your foot. In the case of a blister, its probable you would say where it is.

comment What does the name Chacha (チャチャ) mean?
There is more info. about her real name on the Japanese wiki page 淀殿, as follows:[本名は 浅井 茶々(あざい ちゃちゃ)および浅井 菊子(あざい きくこ)。] I don't know the origin of 茶々, but I found a meaning here that is someone who interrupts others or butts in on conversations. Don't know if that is historically related to her name though.
