What verb is in 覚えてみたい? facepalm Why did I not get that it is that word...I guess I need to brush up on kanji readings again. Apparently Google Translate's rōmaji converter is confused too, and thinks 覚 is "satoru". |

Does all kana in the う line rhyme? 演歌 is always weird with the う sounds. I remember several of them consistently pronouncing the う line with the /y/ or German ü sound, really fronted vowel. Speaking of する, I do in fact perceive it having two different vowels: [sɨɺu] though the way I personally pronounce it it sounds like [sʉɾʉ] or [sɨɾɨ]. |

Origin of ~なければ ならない If you can use いけない then Chinese has an identical expression with ~的话，不行, where 行 is of course a kanji found in 行く. The part that confuses me the most is that why such clearly idiomatic (say, translating "that won't do" with そうせない wouldn't make sense) expressions exists in both Japanese and very modern Chinese. |
