Thanks! Do you know whether this is also used out of the military context in Japanese?

comment What is the connection between shrimp and old age?
I heard it was because of their whiskers, that supposedly resemble old men's moustaches. Either way, it comes down to a likeness in appearance.

comment What is a クリームパン in English?
+1 for mentioning that things often don't have a direct translation because they do not exist in other cultures. I reckon メロンパン is another one of those things.

comment How is determined whether a sound should be romanized into an L versus an R?
See ffcompendium.com/h/names.shtml for more information, and although this is not an official Square-Enix source, I think Occam's razor is valid a lot here. You can check the FF Ultimania books if you need a more legit source.

In the case of FF it is also noteworthy that the/some names are also likely to have been created in 'English' and transliterated back to Japanese. This becomes apparent if you know a LOT of names in FF are based on ideas and mythology not from Japan (like FF8's Irvine apparently being based on the name of a town in America, and the numerous summons coming from various mythological sources). I imagine the original creator helps with the transliteration process, but that's guesswork.

comment Can the term メリークリスマス be seen as politically incorrect?
Recently spent my first Christmas in Japan and was curious about this too. Decided to just ask some natives what people say to each other during Chrismas, and they all came up with メリークリスマス. Totally safe (especially if you consider Chocolate's comment).

comment What does イケメン mean?
Took a bit longer than expected, but nonetheless: I miscopied the sentence indeed, originally it had no particle. Adjusted the post.

comment Why are movies/video-clips counted with 本?
I always figured the usage came from the linearity of the medium in time. A film starts at a certain point, then follows along a line in time and stops at the end, just like most words counted with 本. This is just how my mind linked these two things up together though, this has no valid source whatsoever.
