An intermediate-level learner with an unhealthy fascination with kanji.
Strong dislike for all "One true way to learn Japanese" pronouncements.

What is the difference between 上{あ}げる and 挙{あ}げる? '手を揚げる'? pretty sure that was supposed to be '手を挙げる' |

What's the difference between 平和 and 和平? I've always thought of 和平 in terms of the tongue-in-cheek comment "Peace broke out in XYZ today, as the two sides couldn't remember what they were fighting over", which has been spoofed repeatedly in comedic TheOnion/SNL news broadcasts. |

Why is watermelon written in Hiragana, whereas melon is written in katakana? The confusing bit of this question is the last sentence. What is the general rule that you believe this is an exception to? |

A は/が difference @dainichi: It's in there, I think. (might have been a paraphrase) "represent state change" refers to the context, though... not the specific verb. I was trying to get at that in the next sentence or two... you expanded somewhat more on it. |

A は/が difference I have a MUCH harder time distinguishing thematic and contrastive-は, and some linguists argue that the distinction doesn't actually exist. (I think the argument is that there is no such thing as a thematic-は without a contrastive element) |

Difference between kara and n desu? こわい is a 形容詞/iAdjective, so it is basically never followed by a だ (although 形容詞+です is the formula to make a sentence-final 形容詞 polite). For a 名詞/noun like 大丈夫, the +だ is required to end the sentence. What I think is happening in the こわいから example is technically forming a dependent clause, then eliding(?) the main part of the sentence. |

What's the difference between Ichidan/Godan and Ru/U verbs classification? It has some work to go before it reaches acceptable "FAQ"-level material, but there is a cross-reference for a few terms on meta |
