What are the advantages/disadvantages of writing in romaji instead of kanji, hiragana, and so on? @Dave Sorry to be ambiguous. I meant have a look at how Chinese children learn their own language. They start with pinyin and then move onto script. |

Does the だ get dropped after an い-adjective The old lady is a lady I know. The example I cited was from what I thought I heard, and as istrasci asked, I might not have heard it correctly and just stored that in my brain rule book incorrectly. As for the cultural reference, I don't know about 志村けん. The point of the question was to nail down the rule. |

What is the exact definition of 泥棒? Yes, I like the reference to 泥棒 being the general term. I have been warned not to take persimmons from trees even though NO ONE will eat them otherwise they would call me 柿泥棒 (かきどろぼう) |

Am I coming or going? 戻ってくる vs 戻っていく @Derek Yes we need to be mindful of those situations but we are inconveniencing the people with our mistake. So, I think it would best to use the speech to accompany our feeling. They did after all call Dave on the phone to come get his forgotten item. |

What is the こと in sentences such as あなたのことが好きだ? The first time I heard this was when I was talking to a friend, who is now my wife, and she was telling me that when she was out with 3 others the other girl present told her later that she thought that one of the guys fancied her (my words). みち子のことが好きでしょう! I couldnt give you a definite answer so i thought i wouldnt waste your time, but apparently there are more people who use こと when talking about people. |

To not have: 持っていません or ありません? i believe it is common to say ないです。If you just dont care and want to say ない then just say it =) |

Ending a sentence with さ Plus the dialects change the usage of this sound a lot. Ie, in Osaka, children and young people use it at the end of the sentence as a crutch or speech style. So what we hear can be either standard or dialect. |
