I'm studying computational linguistics at Brigham Young University. I work with linguistic cognitive modelling and automated language testing using speech recognition.

I have been an avid studier of Japanese since 2003, and lived and worked as a missionary in the Chuugoku and Shikoku regions from 2007-2009. I passed the JLPT level 1 in 2009.

@MarkHosang- Ah, for rabbits, yes I am familiar with that. Your original comment makes it sound like 羽 is correct for, say, dogs and fish. I'll update my answer a little.

@MarkHosang Would you send me a source for 匹 being grammatically incorrect? I would definitely think it were ungrammatical if someone said さかな二羽.

comment Japanese/Chinese numbers usage timeline
I added more detail to my question. I did not want to know about the word "八百長", but about the historical usage of Sino-Japanese numbers.

comment What is the proper pronunciation for 十分/10分? じっぷん or じゅっぷん?
I've read that じゅ is naturally pronounced as じ in this context, not just for the word 十分. This kind of fluctuation/disagreement is natural.

comment Why do English sources for learning Japanese leave out pitch?
Although it bugs the crap out of me, I'm afraid that the answer to this question may be that textbooks provide a "good enough" pronunciation that people can be understood. I really wish that all text books listed it with the vocab though; I've known Japanese people to pick out gaijin recordings based on the pitch accent of a few words! Fortunately, there are dictionaries. This site lists pitch accent with entries. A lot of people one for their Casios, too.

I used to tell other missionaries that we sound to Japanese people like Sean Connery does to us when we use postalveolars :)

Generally, yes. に occurs very commonly with it (before, not after).

comment What does the internet slang “草生えた” mean?
This is awesome. I wonder if any might link it to the expression たね (ネタ) referring to punch lines.

comment Learning Japanese rhetoric and composition
I may look into that. I'm a little wary though because I passed level 1 a while back and still want more information. I need something that teaches how to write, which they don't test on the JLPT (at least last I checked).

I always translated 一応 as "kind of".

I would not translate it that way, and that is not how it is treated in the literature.

Easier to see when you add 未成人 to the mix; "not 成人" means a "minor" in legal terms

comment two levels for teiru and rare
Alright, I see that they are all typos. However, I have been told that double -rare- is legal (taberareteirareru, but never taberareteirareteiru). Does this mean that there is no emphatic version, either?

All of the hits contain the sequence. Did you search and see what I'm talking about?
