Can 【~たら】 be a short form of 【~てから】? Dropping consonsants happens in one of the most common words in the language: おはよう. The origin is basically お+はやく -> おはやう -> おはよう. ありがとう was formed by the same process. Adverbs are still formed this way today in Kansai-ben, too. |

「~たじゃない」 expression in spoken Japanese "putting の everywhere is a bad habit if you're not a girl"? First I've heard of this. If you end your sentence with の (as opposed to のだ), that's one thing, but I'm not aware of the use of の/ん being itself feminine. |

森 vs 林 for forest I'd say "woods"... "copse" is an exceedingly rare word. |

Why is 「昨夜」 pronounced as 「ゆうべ」 {yuube} and 「今日」 as 「きょう」 {kyou}? This is not a case of ateji. Ateji means using a kanji for its sound instead of its meaning. This is using a kanji for its meaning instead of its sound. |

What's the difference between wa (は) and ga (が)? While this certainly isn't a bad question -- in fact, it's one that virtually every student of Japanese asks -- I think that it may be more helpful to ask questions about specific usages. Like if you see a sentence that uses が where you would expect は, you can post that as a question -- why is it like that? |

When do you use 下さい as opposed to ください Shouldn't it be an answer rather than a comment, then? I think the difference is significant enough to warrant it... |
