Interpretation of a sentence by Mishima I think that giving a translation with a good reason for why it is a good translation would constitute a good answer, even if there is no objective answer to "which translation is better?". Having 2.5 answers per question seems to be the goal on area51, so I presume we need more questions like this one. (If we want to conform to area51 standards, that is.) |

Verbs which are more frequently used to built the honorific passive forms If you didn't already, it might be worth reading through the other questions, which ask about this difference. |

What is the meaning of 大奥婚? Whatever 大奥 refers to, 婚 is just short for 結婚. |

What's the difference between 〜に対しての and 〜に対する? @dainichi To me ある行為に対してする弁明をする sounds like it is more likely to be parsed as (ある行為に対してする弁明)を(する) rather than (ある行為に対してする)(弁明をする). |

Translation for “Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything.” Somebody should migrate the first question to Martial Arts SE. |

Which time expressions take the に particle? Depends how you count, but when you consider だ and で as different forms of です, then it only happens with です (and its two other incarnations). In other words, there is only one copula in Japanese, which inflects to です, だ and で. Each of these may act as copula, and if it does, then a time reference, like すいようび, is not an adverb and doesn't take に. |

Which time expressions take the に particle? I think the question about "かいぎはすいようびです" is not covered by the possible duplicate. |

When to use 聴く vs 聞く vs 訊く? @oldergod I consider 聞ける the potential form of 聞く when it means "to ask". |

When to use 聴く vs 聞く vs 訊く? @oldergod I consider 聞こえる the potential form of 聞く, at least when it means "to hear". (The OP also didn't ask about 聴いてる.) |

When to use 聴く vs 聞く vs 訊く? @oldergod It's easy to find examples with 聞く rather than 聞こえる, where it still means "hearing" and not "listening". |

Words for Ginkgo in Japanese: ぎんきょう and ぎんなん BTW, it appears that (PDF) Kaempfer himself couldn't remember how he romanized 銀杏 and the spelling "Ginkgo" already appears in his own hand-written notes. |

Which verb receives a negation in a Japanese sentence? in 歩かないで渡る you say that you are crossing (without walking), in 歩いて渡らない you say that you are not crossing (as long as you are walking)... I don't regard 渡る an auxiliary in this case, which is probably why it is possible to have to sensible interpretations of negating both parts separately. (There is also 歩かないで渡らない "As long as I'm not walking, I won't cross".) When the second verb is an auxiliary, the verb+aux. is considered as one whole and the negation is done by the auxiliary. Trying the negation on the full verb, you have to reinterpret the auxiliary as full verb, too. |

Can に mean the same thing as から? @Chocolate 返事が遅くなってすみませんでした。私の感覚ではこの例文で「から」との文章は「に」との文章と意味が全く一緒なんですが、一般的にニュアンスが違う場合もある。まぁ、今はタイトルまで変わってきて、この場合同じ意味が持つってことでいいかもしれないんですよね。フォローアップしてくれてありがとうございました。 |

Are non-base-10 numbers ever written in kanji? The prices in restaurants are often written in kanji, in decimal notation: 一三八〇円, where zero is written not 0, but 〇 (which should appear when converting maru in most IMEs). |
