comment Difference between 検索する and 探す
@yadokari Yea, that's where I got the kanji from, but I'm looking for a more in depth explanation here. A dictionary can only tell you that two words are synonyms, but it doesn't explain when to use one over the other.

comment あれが for “that must be it”?
I feel like with あれが there's some verb that's being omitted for brevity. Do you know what it is? I'm thinking あれが(探しているのです), but I'm not sure.

comment Translation of 終わらせる
What seems particularly odd to me is that 終わらせる would be used instead of 終える...I'm looking forward to seeing what the answer to this is.

comment The に particle outside of location and direction
@Nathan In a way they are. There's somewhat of a gray area between all three usages (which probably is why the Japanese chose a single particle to represent it). It's best to think of the usage of the に particle independent of any English analogy. Just think of it as having the usage of the に particle.

comment What form is this?
In all my experience with the term verb stem, it has always referred to the part that precedes the -ます of the polite form of a verb.

Quite different from what others have said. Might this be a regional thing?

comment What is the difference between 出す and 始める when used as a suffix?
I'm always skeptical of "more formal". In general, if something says "more formal" as an explanation, it's either wrong, or there's a lot more to it than that.
