comment How to say “to mutilate” in Japanese
@RudytheReindeer Nothing precise. Searching a term on twitter just mines up short examples of apparently spontaneous use of the term/expression in question.

For guaging general usage of a Japanese term once you've found one, Twitter is a great resource. You can search arbitrary phrases.

comment ゆく used in auxiliary sense - instead of いく?
@非回答者 is on point about the conjugations; you only hear ゆく and ゆき. Personally, I feel like ゆく can sound more poetic or whatever: 東から西へ太陽が絶えずに空を飛んでゆき、日々に自分の老化を実感して来る. Not sure why that example popped in my head :-/

comment How should we understand the plain form when used in novels set in the past?
We do this in English even: It was January, 1943, the guy sitting next to me is praying nervously, but all we could do was tighten up our 'chute straps and prepare to jump.

@Earthling, Good point. My lack of historical awareness leaked through into the original. Made appropriate edit.

I recommend www.alc.co.jp as a starting point for these kinds of questions. It contains a huge library of example sentences and you can search multiple words simultaneously in both English and Japanese.

comment What's a nice way to say “fingers crossed”?
Not sure why you got downvoted, but I'd agree with oldergod, you might tend to say something like うまくいきますように!to show that you hope it goes well.
