Why does 考えて need も in the “て + ごらん” pattern? Once you strip out the colloquialisms and 尊敬語 (politeness), is there really any difference in meaning between the pairs 考えてご覧/考えてもご覧 and 考えて見て/考えても見て? |

What is the difference between 口元 and 口? I have often wondered about why people refer to 足元 as opposed to just 足. Now I know! |

What is the difference between むかしっから and むかしから? @silvermaple: I think these comments and the old q add up to an answer but for completeness, can you share the context? It might give some insight in to the use of literary license in written Japanese. |

What is the difference between むかしっから and むかしから? @flaw: I agree: it seems to be giving more emphasis, consistent with thoughts (maybe I am actually hearing "mukasssh'kara"). |

What is the difference between むかしっから and むかしから? I'll keep this as a comment for now because I don't have a reference but when somebody tells me something has been the case/taking palce for "a long long long time" they will say something that sounds like "mukaash'kara....[nantokayatte kite ita]". (My mother in law comes to mind but it could be anyone.) This sounds like the same thing. If this is in the normal narrative perhaps the writer is just using it to convey this effect (literary license?). |

When is 「だ/である」required between a noun and the quotation particle と? @Teno: Thanks for your interest. I've tried to enhance the question but it is a bit harder to come up with sentences - I never know when my 作文 will be correct. |

Learning Japanese rhetoric and composition As I said, I just passed N1 (and I passed 2-kyuu many years ago) but passing does not mean your are competent in all areas. I need to improve my creative abilities too but before I can do that I think I need to actively read and think about how to use the language. |
