comment When is it acceptable to use “Newspaper grammar”?
@Daruius Jahandarie: Thank you for your answer. Are you sure a newspaper is omitting であるnot だ? The Dictionary of Intermediate Jpse Grammar says the omission is だ and gives examples from the Nikkei. (I thought である was used in reports, academic papers. magazine (& possibly newspaper?) essays but not straight forward news reports).

Thank you. At the risk of asking ignorant question, who is Kazuo Tatsuo? I can see that he does not think it is a very good idea to use this style but Without his kanji I cannot google him (or tell which is his 名字).

Your end note touches another topic I have been meaning to raise but I will make it a separate question.

Thank you for your answer. Can I conclude that if the subject of an "embedded sentence" (here 「天皇陛下が昨年12月23日に80歳の傘寿を迎えられた」) should be addressed "honorifically" then the "passive-honorific verb" (here「迎えられた」) should be used instead of the honorific verb that would have been used in a "stand alone" sentence (ie 「お迎えになられた」), or is either form fine?

comment Choosing the right prefix of the ko-so-a-do series
風邪 is definitely correct and I've changed it (thanks). My dictionary (プログレッシブ・・)gives examples using both ひく and 引く so while the latter is not wrong, I assumed it is not unusual to use hiragana on the basis that kanji are used for key words only. As Chocolate has just corrected it to ひいて I guess it is ok. (39 Chocolate)

@DaveMG: I have made an addition to my answer. After this I think it is just practical application.

Sounds like you have the old edition not 新完全マスター (p134). The conversational examples I mention above refer a similar principal. I have added an additional explanation to cover these.
