comment What's the difference between 三角 and 三角形?
I agree that 三角 can be used to make compound words with the meaning of "triangular" but usually 三角形 cannot. However, as single nouns, 三角 and 三角形 have almost the same meaning. We often use 三角, because it is shorter and easier to say.

comment What is the appropriate size of hiragana in proportion to kanji?
@TsuyoshiIto I don't say that it is "universal" or "always". I give a common reason, which is widely known, but I don't deny that there might be other reasons.

comment same reading, similar meaning, different Kanji
I didn't write about this, but actually, it is doubted that 上 and 神 are etymologically related. Most of scholars don't believe that they are related. Ancient Japanese texts reveal that 神 and 上 were pronounced differently (they had different み sounds), though the origin of the word 神 is still unknown.

Your other examples mentioned above actually may confuse even the modern Japanese people. I think that is the topic of this question. However, I totally can't understand why you are confused with 神 and 上 in actual use. Are you possibly confused which character should be used, 神 or 上? If so, can you give an example?

comment do people actually respect the nuances of 探す vs 捜す?
If you use only 探す, there will be almost no problem. Most people usually don't care about the difference. 捜す is often used with a particular intent.

三角形 is a mathematical (official) term. In a math class, you should call it 三角形.

comment What is the difference between 日曜日【にちようび】and 日曜【にちよう】?
I think both can be interpreted as the same meaning. We can't determine which means which by reading just individual sentences without their contexts. If there were a tiny tendency actually, we should not depend upon it to avoid miscommunication.

You can't say 好きながら, but can say 読書好きながら. In this case, 読書好き is a noun.
