Why does “お侍ちゃん” sound funny? To answer this question, I think you need to know what image/impression the word お侍さん conjures up. (@sawa-san, どうでしょ、この線で?) |

Was 俺 ever gender-neutral? Ah yes, come to think of it, I often heard elderly women in Tohoku region say 'おれ'! Probably it's regional, because I've never heard any woman say おれ in Kansai. |

What does ただいま actually mean? @dotnetN00b-san, I can still see Dono-san's answer, which was posted 16 hrs ago and deleted 5 hrs ago. I think you can see it too...? (I don't know StackExchange's system very well, but I have been able to see all deleted answers in JLU since last month or so...) |

What does ただいま actually mean? ただ is an adverb (ただ can also be used as a noun though, like 「ただの人」(ordinary)「料金はただです」(free of charge)), meaning 'just/only', and it is often used in a set phrase with だけ, ばかり, のみ or しか, like 「ただ月が照るばかりだ」「ただ見つめるだけだった」「ただ命令に従うのみ」「ただ祈るしかなかった」. According to my Japanese dictionary, たった is 「'ただ'の促音化(Sokuon-ka. Sokuon is 'っ'/little つ.)」, meaning 'ほんの', 'only'. e.g.「たったこれだけ」「たった今帰ったところ」「たった10円しか入ってない」. |

Is it normal to use ただいま in situations other than ただいま戻【もど】りました? @atlantiza I'd probably say たったいま起きた/たったいま食べた/たったいま起きました/たったいま食べました (たったいま食べたところです would sound more natural though) but not ただいま起きた/ただいま食べた, probably because the verbs 起きた/食べた are too casual for 'ただいま~~', and たったいま is OK because it sounds more casual than ただいま. I wouldn't say ただいま面白いことに気づきました either, I'd say たったいま面白いことに気づきました. |

What are the exceptions of using に and で with regard to 住む and 勤める? @gibbon I expected people could probably compare 勤める to 働く and 住む to 暮らす then it wouldn't be that hard to get the notion of why に is used for one and で for the other |

What are the exceptions of using に and で with regard to 住む and 勤める? Hmm we say 銀行に勤める, not 銀行で勤める. 銀行で働く, not 銀行に働く. (大阪に勤める sounds like 'I commute to Osaka' btw.) Not 大阪で住む but 大阪に住む, but not 大阪に暮らす but 大阪で暮らす... confusing |
