What is the difference between 直観 and 直感? One of my Japanese-English dictionaries says 直観 is "intuition/instinct/immediacy", and 直感 is "hunch/scent/flair/sixth sense". |

Using により to specify method @JesseGoodsan-- Hmm even if we want to sound formal, I don't think we'd say 電話により(or電話によって)通報する/電話によりお知らせします(orお知らせいたします/ご連絡いたしますetc.)... I think 「電話で通報する」「携帯電話で/携帯電話から通報する」are more commonly used when you talk about calling the police. When you're not calling "the police", use the word 連絡/お知らせ and want to sound formal, I think 「(お)電話にて(orで)(ご)連絡・お知らせします/いたします/させていただきます」are commonly used. |

Why did the author use hiragana instead of kanji in the following examples? (長い,幼い) 「幼い子供はおさないときに母をしゃぶり、大きくなって父親をしゃぶる。」??What a weird sentence...What does it mean...? |

How did やわらかい gain its い? Wow I haven't noticed, how interesting... goo辞書 says やわらかな is 「[形動]」, and it says やわらかい is「[形]」,「形容動詞「やわらか」の形容詞化」. I can't think of any other ~~らか words that can be i-adjectives... Maybe やわらか(い) is a very unique word...? |

How to decide to use どうせ or しょせん? @Paceriersan, As sawa-san stated in her post, I think しょせん can normally be replaced by どうせ(--am I right?). どうせ sounds to me much more conversational than しょせん. |

How do I say “I understand much better than before.”? @dotnetN00bsan, Hmm 前よりもっと sounds to me like you're comparing "this time" with "前=last time"... I mean, if you say 前よりもっと分かった/前よりわかった (=前より+past tense), I think it implies that you understood better "this time", but you didn't understand that much "last time you were taught"... so maybe I'd say 前よりずいぶん(orずっと)理解が深まりました/お陰で、(orお陰様で、)ずいぶん理解が深まりました/前よりずいぶんわかって"きました"(not the simple present when you add 前より-- then this 前 sounds like "以前, before")/ずいぶんわかってきました/or just とてもよくわかりました/お陰様でとてもよくわかりました or お陰様で、かなり分かって"きました"。 |

How and when to use せや and its variants in Kansai-ben? Yes... my friend also says she thinks せや~ is more used by older people and そや~ by younger people. I've always thought せや~ is used more in Osaka and そや~ is more used in Kyoto. |

What is the difference between 直観 and 直感? So, 直覚[ちょっかく] is "intuition", 直観[ちょっかん] is more like "Anschauung", and 直感[ちょっかん] is "intuition" too? |
